Stephen Bergstrom, SAIT: RAND(om) Thoughts

 

One of the easiest ways for students to cheat on exams or assignments is by copying answers from their friends or neighbors.  An obvious solution to the problem is to give each student a unique assessment, with different questions or parameters than their classmates; but who has the time to create so many different copies of an exam or assignment?  This session will demonstrate how you can use some simple functions in Microsoft Excel (such as RAND() and RANDBETWEEN() ) to randomly generate different assessments (and answer keys to go with them!) with relatively little long-term effort.

CPA Canada: Strengthening Candidates' Performance on the CFE

Presenters: Lori Weatherbie and Kathy Letourneau, CPA Canada

In this session, CPAC Board of Examiners staff will speak to candidate performance on the Common Final Examination (CFE) and PEP staff will speak to what it is doing to address those weaknesses.

CPAC staff will use the CFE report to guide the discussion and elaborate on the specific strengths and weaknesses discussed in the report, and use some examples to illustrate/further support the discussion. Evaluation staff will also discuss some of the “pitfalls” we see in the candidates’ writing techniques and strategies, and make suggestions as to how this high-stakes examination should be approached. PEP staff will discuss the changes that have been made in the Core and Elective modules, in both online learning materials and face-to-face workshop activities to strengthen candidates' performance of the CFE.

Anna Czegledi, Conestoga College: Advanced Financial Accounting: Using real company data to enhance the student learning experience

 

This interactive educational session will focus on how to introduce real company financial data to enhance students learning experience for Advanced Financial Accounting and Advanced Finance classes and reduce the gap between accounting education and practice.  

By the end of the session, attendees will have new practical ideas to include into their teaching to help students to develop their ability to analyze data and see “the big picture”. There will be an opportunity for participants to share ideas during a roundtable discussion.

CPA Canada: Accountants supporting Resilient Adaptable Innovative Sustainable Enterprise (RAISE)

A changing climate gives rise to a variety of organizational issues including operational, financial and strategic planning concerns. Professional accountants have a critical role to play in how organizations respond in managing risk and opportunity and creating a more resilient organization.

This session will show accountants how to recognize risks and opportunities of climate change and how their CPA competencies are relevant in responding to climate change. The seminar will be interactive.  It will include a mix of large and small group discussion and case study work.

The course draws on material from a multi-year initiative sponsored by CPA Canada and Natural Resources Canada and managed by the Network for Business Sustainability.

Dans le cadre de cet atelier, nous examinerons diverses idées reçues sur le comportement des milléniaux en classe et leurs méthodes préférées d’apprentissage.

Lors de cet atelier pratique, vous :

  • réfléchirez aux besoins pédagogiques des élèves et comprendrez la dynamique propre aux milléniaux dans une salle de classe ;
  • découvrirez et essaierez des stratégies pour répondre efficacement à ces besoins à l’aide d’outils d’apprentissage interactifs comme les tests autoévalués et d’outils de présentation dynamiques comme Prezi et Powtoon ;
  • examinerez l’effet de ces outils sur vos objectifs et résultats d’apprentissage et réfléchirez à l’influence qu’ils pourraient avoir sur la réussite et l'intégration des milléniaux dans le processus d’apprentissage.

Millennials are fast-paced learners, who prefer multitasking and want to be “connected” anytime and anywhere. Many of us struggle to find a variety of teaching tools and methods that will maximize their engagement.

In this workshop, we explore different beliefs about classroom behaviours and learning preferences of millennials.

In this hands-on workshop, participants:

  • reflect on the variety of educational needs of the students and understand the dynamics millennials bring to the classroom;
  • find and practice strategies to address these needs effectively through interactive teaching tools such as self-grading quizzes, and non-static presentation tools such as Prezi and Powtoon;
  • explore the effect of these tools on assigned learning objectives and outcomes, and reflect on the impact they might have on the success and deeper integration of millennials in the learning process.

The Process of Learning Model (POLM) provides a step-by-step guide to develop and integrate peer instruction, flipped classroom, flipped assessment, collaborative learning and experiential learning within your classroom environment. Participants will discuss the influence of Constructivist Learning Theory in student learning; identify metacognitive enhancing strategies for student pre-class work and post-class engagement.

Présentatrice : Nancy Michaud, UQÀR

Cette séance de formation pratique porte sur l’utilisation de stratégies d’enseignement qui suscitent l’intérêt et vise le partage d’idées novatrices pour l’enseignement de l’audit au 1er cycle. Tout d’abord, la professeure présente des outils multimédias développés par une équipe d’enseignants dont elle a fait partie. Cette façon de faire est tout à fait en lien avec le concept relativement nouveau de la « classe inversée ». En demandant aux étudiants d’étudier des concepts théoriques en dehors des heures de cours, la professeure peut alors utiliser le temps en classe pour mettre en place d’autres stratégies pédagogiques qui favorisent l’implication des étudiants dans la salle de classe. Par la suite, cette séance de formation aborde l’utilisation de situations pratiques créées par la professeure afin de développer les compétences des étudiants au niveau de différents concepts d’audit. Finalement, une dernière stratégie présentée porte sur l’utilisation d’une entreprise d’entrainement pédagogique pour procéder à une simulation partielle en audit. Cette dernière stratégie permet aux étudiants de réaliser, de façon concrète, une partie du travail de l’auditeur. En plus d’exposer comment opérationnaliser l’enseignement des stratégies présentées, la professeure fait également part des trucs et astuces tirées de sa pratique d’enseignement universitaire.

This session explores the use of educational technologies, and best practices in teaching and learning through the application of the Technology Integration Matrix. Participants are introduced to the matrix which provides a framework for defining, and evaluating technology integration to enhance learning. “Are you sure you want to eat … THAT?” -  Consumer and Supplier Perceptions of Fraud and Safety in Food Systems

Who produced it? Who grew it? Is it traceable? Is it organic? Is it authentic? What would we pay to know…and can we ever be sure?

As consumers, we are becoming ever more educated and concerned about how our food gets safely from the farm to our forks. Consumer trust in food authenticity and safety – and thus, prevention of food fraud – is crucial to everyone in the supply chain, from agribusinesses to the grocery store.

Dr. Sylvain Charlebois is the Dean of the Faculty of Management of Dalhousie University in Halifax. Dr. Charlebois is a member of the Global Food Traceability Centre’s Advisory Board based in Washington DC, and a member of the National Advisory Board of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency in Ottawa. He is a frequent contributor to La Presse and The Globe and Mail on food safety issues, and has acted as an advisor on food and agricultural policies in many Canadian provinces, and in more than 10 countries.
