2021 Inductees
The CAHF Board of Electors is pleased to announce the inaugural Inductees to the Canadian Accounting Hall of Fame.
Initial Inductees to the CAHF in 2021
Four of those inducted to the AAA Accounting Hall of Fame have been from Canada. Their names, year of induction into that Hall, and most senior career positions attained and roles, are as follows:
Samuel J. Broad
1954 – Deputy Senior Partner, Peat Marwick Mitchell, New York (to which he was transferred from Calgary in 1920); President, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA); and chair of several key AICPA committees, including those on accounting principles and auditing standards.

Gerald A. Feltham
2004 – Professor, Faculty of Business Administration, University of British Columbia; Co-Editor, Contemporary Accounting Research; and author/co-author of several ground-breaking academic studies, including some which were recognized with prestigious academic awards, in both Canada and the USA.

Howard I. Ross
1977 – Chair of Policy Board, Touche Ross, the firm founded by his grandfather; President of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Quebec and of the CICA; two positions at McGill University: Dean, Faculty of Business, and Chancellor; received the OBE for outstanding work during World War II.

Ross M. Skinner
2000 – National Director of Accounting Standards, Clarkson Gordon & Co.; also author/co-author of two major accounting texts and one auditing text; member/Chair of the Financial Disclosure Advisory Board of the Ontario Securities Commission; was one of the first to receive the Ontario Institute’s Award of Outstanding Merit.

“Founders of the Profession” inducted in 2021
The following four were elected by the CAHF Board of Electors in January 2021, showing their prime contributions to accounting:
E. R. C. Clarkson
led the national firm which became Clarkson, Gordon & Co. from 1872 to 1913; one of founding members of the predecessor body to The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario in 1879, and also of the Dominion Association of Chartered Accountants in 1902.

Gordon H. Cowperthwaite
was one of founding members of (a) the Canadian Association of Management consultants in 1963, (b) the International Federation of Accountants in 1977, and (c) the Canadian Audit and Accountability Foundation in 1980. Also, he was President of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants in 1977/78 and of the International Federation of Accountants from 1980 to 1982.

George Edwards
founded the national firm Edwards, Morgan & Co. in 1893 and ran it until 1926; served on the Council of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (ICAO) for 32 years (including four as President); served on the Council of the Dominion Association of Chartered Accountants for about 20 years; and was first Chair of the Board of the Society of Cost Accountants of Canada in 1920. First Managing Editor of the Canadian Chartered Accountant, and chaired the ICAO’s Board of Instruction for 23 years.

Philip S. Ross
in 1858 he founded the firm that in due course became Touche Ross, and led it for 37 years; also, in 1879, he participated in founding the first accounting body in North America, which became the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Quebec, and served as its President for 13 years.

Douglas N. Baker
was known for his extraordinary service to four accounting bodies: (a) the Board of Examiners for the CA profession, which included a two-year term as Chair 1994-96; (b) the Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta, from 1999 to 2003, culminating as President; (c) the CA School of Business for western Canada, which he chaired from 2004 to 2008; and (d) the Board of Directors of the CICA, with two years as Vice Chair and two as Chair.

Gertrude Mulcahy
the first woman CA to have a national profile, first as Secretary to the national Board of Examiners, and then as Director of Research for the CICA. She was the first woman to be elected a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (FCA), in 1962, and then the first to receive the Institute’s Award of Outstanding Merit, in 1990.

William R. Scott
his achievements as a leading professor at Queen’s and Waterloo included two prestigious awards from the CAAA, serving as Editor of Contemporary Accounting Research 1989-91, and eight editions of his Financial Accounting Theory text, which has been translated into Chinese, Japanese and Korean over the past 24 years. In addition, he served on the Academic Advisory Committee of the Canadian Accounting Standards Board from 2005 to 2015.

Dan A. Simunic
served as a professor at UBC for 39 years, as Co-Editor of Contemporary Accounting Research 1997–2000, as Editor of other accounting journals, and as Technical Advisor to the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board 1988 to 1997. He has been honoured by the CAAA and by the Certified General Accountants Association of Canada. Also, he has received awards from the CAAA and the Auditing Section of the AAA, and has published highly-cited papers in prestigious academic journals.
