Description
|
In a world increasingly cognizant of the finite nature of its resources, the concept of Natural Capital Accounting (NCA) emerges as a pivotal tool. This approach redefines how we value our planet's ecosystems, integrating ecological health with economic progress. NCA goes beyond assessing individual natural assets, focusing instead on the broader value of ecosystems and the services they provide. By quantifying these values, NCA offers a framework for informed decision-making that respects the intricate balance between economic development and environmental sustainability.
This webinar aims to delve deep into the realms of NCA, tracing its evolution from early environmental economic concepts to contemporary applications encompassing the valuation of entire ecosystems. It will explore the methodologies in NCA, highlight its significant role in biodiversity conservation, and examine its impact on addressing externalities. Additionally, the webinar will analyze how NCA influences and mobilizes capital markets toward sustainable investments and discuss the challenges and future directions in this field.
In summary, this webinar provides a comprehensive overview of NCA, underscoring its critical importance in the discourse on sustainable development and integrating environmental considerations in economic decision-making.

Ellena Damini
Valuations Consultant in KPMG Canada’s Deal Advisory
|
Ellena is a Valuations Consultant in KPMG Canada’s Deal Advisory business unit and recent finance graduate of the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University. During her tenure at Carleton, Ellena served as the Portfolio Manager of the Sprott Student Investment Fund, overseeing a team of 22 students in the management of a $2.0 million North American equity portfolio on behalf of the Carleton University Endowment Fund. In this pivotal role, Ellena spearheaded the integration of Responsible Investment and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles on internal, asset, and portfolio levels. Her leadership showcased a keen interest in the convergence of sustainability and finance, as well as a dedication to aligning investment practices with ethical considerations. This experience exposed her to a significant gap in research on the impact of ESG considerations on financial markets. Negative associations framing ESG as a financial sacrifice caught her attention, prompting a determination to produce empirical evidence to shift perspectives. Ellena competitively secured a research internship at the Sprott School of Business, where she focused on evaluating the potential benefits of incorporating ESG as a quantifiable metric within an equity portfolio. This commitment to impactful research continued with a second assistantship, working under the guidance of Dr. Leanne Keddie. In collaboration with CPA Canada and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, Ellena conducted research on tools used to value natural and cultural capital at UNESCO-designated heritage sites in Canada. This exploration into natural and cultural capital valuation marked a significant shift from traditional business valuation, deepening Ellena's engagement with the intersection of sustainability and the economy. Dr. Keddie and Ellena shared their findings by presenting this research at the 2023 Administrative Sciences Association of Canada conference. Drawing from both her professional and academic experiences, Ellena is motivated to drive meaningful change. Positioned at the crossroads of value and values, she is dedicated to constructing a sustainable, equitable, and prosperous future.
