- The principal researcher must be a CAAA member when submitting the letter of intent for the CPA–CAAA, CBV-CAAA or the proposal for the CAAA research grant.
- All researchers involved in the project must be a CAAA members during the grant period.

It is CAAA policy that no sitting CAAA Board Member may apply for research grants during their term of office, nor in the six (6) months immediately following their departure from the CAAA Board. In addition, members of a research sub-committee may not apply for awards adjudicated by that committee during their term of office.
Applicants may not submit identical or substantially similar projects to concurrent CPA–CAAA, CBV-CAAA and CAAA Research Grant programs.
ELIGIBLE COSTS
When preparing the budget, the researcher should include only expenses directly related to achieving the grant objectives.
Eligible costs (examples):
- Hiring research assistants for defined project tasks
- Purchase or rental of special data sets, software, or other research tools (requested in the proposal)
- Transportation and subsistence for data gathering or developing research arrangements
- Telephone, postage, photocopying, typing, etc.
- Travel expenses, up to a maximum of $2,000 from the research funds
- Presentation at the CAAA conference is strongly encouraged
- CBV–CAAA only: At the discretion of CBV Institute, awardees may be invited to attend and present at the CBV Institute annual CONNECT conference. Travel costs for CONNECT would be covered separately by CBV Institute and not from the grant budget.
Ineligible costs:
- CAAA membership fees
- Allocating the total grant award to travel alone
- Reallocating funds from other categories to purchase unapproved computer hardware or software
- Any form of salary (including course release / teaching buyout)
- Indirect costs, overhead, or administration fees charged by institutions
Notes:
- Expenses must match the uses described in the research proposal.
- Inadequately justified items may be reduced or disallowed.
PAYMENT OF FUNDS
The CAAA will make a direct deposit to the principal researcher's institution for retention on your behalf in a grant account. If overhead costs cannot be avoided, applicants should contact the CAAA Office by e-mail to make alternative arrangements. The researcher may only charge to the grant expenses that are directly related to achieving the grant's objectives and generally consistent with the expected costs described in the research proposal.
Research funds will be available to the investigator until the deadline specified in the award letter. After this deadline, it is expected that any unspent research monies will be returned to the CAAA.
A request to extend the deadline would be rare and must be submitted in writing. See "Research Grants Extension Request." All such requests would be directed to the Research Chair, who has complete discretion.
PROPOSAL
Please note the following terms & conditions regarding proposals:
- Applicants may not submit identical or substantially similar projects to concurrent CPA Canada–CAAA, CBV Institute–CAAA, and CAAA Research Grant programs.
- Funding ranges: CPA Canada–CAAA and CAAA (typically $5,000–$15,000); CBV Institute–CAAA (up to $13,000).
- The Publications & Research Committee (or delegates) evaluates proposals and determines funding. Decisions are final and not subject to appeal.
- Doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows applying independently (i.e. without a faculty member as co-investigator) are required to provide a letter of support from their supervisor at the time of proposal submission. The letter must confirm institutional affiliation and the applicant’s ability to carry out the research.
ACCEPTANCE OF TERMS AND CONDITIONS
The researcher must agree to the terms and conditions of financial support as described by completing the Survey Monkey. A link will be provided in the award letter.
CERTIFICATE OF ETHICS
Successful applications involving experimentation with human subjects are required to submit a Certificate of Ethics from their institution's committees on research on human subjects as soon as possible after receiving notification of their award. A Survey Monkey link will be provided in the award letter to submit the Certificate of Ethics.
If approval is not required by the applicant's institutions, a statement to that effect must be included in the application.
REPORTING
The principal researcher will respond to periodic requests, typically on a bi-annual basis, from the Office of CAAA for progress reports on the status of the research project. The researcher will include copies of working papers, papers presented at conferences, and published papers with progress reports. The Office will send a copy of all such documents to the funding organization.
COMPLETION OF PROJECT
The Principal Investigator (PI) is responsible for completing the approved research project within 36 months. The project is considered complete when a working paper is accepted and presented at a peer-reviewed conference, or a paper is published in a journal. Remaining grant funds may continue to be used within the 36-month grant period after a conference presentation or first-round journal submission, subject to periodic reporting to the CAAA. The PI may publish multiple papers from the project.
If the project cannot continue due to unforeseen circumstances (e.g., illness or other exceptional events), the PI must notify the CAAA office.
For both completed and terminated projects, any unspent funds must be returned to the CAAA.
Effective as of August 2025. PIs should also reference the specific terms outlined in their award letter.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The researcher will give appropriate credit to the CAAA and the organization which provided the funds for the research project in any papers and publications resulting from it.
This page was last October 20, 2025. PIs for grants awarded before this date should reference the specific terms outlined in their award letter.
