The symposium aims to bring together researchers, educators, practitioners, and students to share and discuss current issues and challenges in accounting ethics.

The symposium will be held on September 17th and 18th, 2026, in Toronto, Ontario.

 This year, we aim to explore the broad spectrum of accounting ethics to encompass emerging ethical challenges in the accounting profession.

Theme: ACCOUNTING ETHICS

The symposium is open to any research projects that address any aspect of accounting ethics, using any research methodology (e.g., empirical archival, experimental, analytical, or other methods). The following topics are only some examples of possible areas of interest, but they are not meant to be exhaustive or restrictive:

• The ethical considerations in using AI, machine learning, blockchain, or big data in accounting practices. 
• Psychological and organizational factors which influence ethical or unethical choices. 
• Ethical considerations in ESG metrics, reporting transparency, and stakeholder impacts. 
• The effectiveness, ethical implications, and psychological burden of whistleblowing within accounting firms. 
• Tax avoidance and tax planning in a global context. 
• The tension between managerial duties and ethical responsibilities when dealing with internal financial information. 
• Variations in ethical accounting practices across different cultural, economic, or political landscapes. 
• The ethical challenges faced by accountants in government and non-profit organizations. 
• Ethical considerations during financial crises, pandemics, or other emergency situations. 
• The ethical dilemmas involved in reporting on social impact, employee welfare, and community engagement. 

Call for PhD Research Presentations from Canadian Doctoral Students:

The Centre for Accounting Ethics invites students presently registered in a Canadian Doctoral Program to submit a short proposal for consideration for inclusion in a PhD Research Presentation Session at the Symposium. We encourage students who have a research project focused on any accounting ethics topic to submit a proposal.

 Submission Guidelines:

 The proposal should be up to 1000 words, and address one or more of the following:

 A research project for which data has already been collected at least in pilot form.

• A research project design that includes a description of the literature from which the project flows.
• A theoretical problem with proposed research design directions.

 Papers should be submitted electronically as a PDF file to Jenny Rothwell at [email protected] by June 1, 2026. Abstracts (proposals) will be subject to blind review and notice of acceptance will be sent by July 15, 2026. Should the abstract be accepted, students will be expected to prepare a poster for the Symposium and be available at the Symposium to make a brief 5-minute presentation during the conference and to discuss its contents during a poster session. The students will be invited to attend the full Symposium and reasonable financial support will be available for those attending from outside of Toronto.
