10:00 a.m. to 11 a.m. (CST) Diving Deeper with Data Analytics in the Accounting Curriculum

Join Ryan A. Teeter, Clinical Associate Professor, University of Pittsburgh and author of Data Analytics for Accounting, 2e as he discusses best practices for teaching and learning data analytics and how to effectively implement into the classroom. 


Presenter Bio: Ryan Teeter is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Pittsburgh. He is co-author of Data Analytics for Accounting and Introduction to Data Analytics for Accounting published by McGraw-Hill. Ryan has taught Accounting Data Analytics for 4 years and Accounting Information Systems for over 10 years as well as various other core accounting courses. He has also worked on internal audit projects with Fortune 100 companies, including Siemens and Procter & Gamble. In his free time, he enjoys photography, video games, and going for bike rides.

11:00 a.m. to 12 noon (CST) Data Analytics Cases for Introductory Accounting

A First Course on Data Analytics for Accounting

Wendy Tietz, Kent State University and Tracie Miller-Knobles, Austin Community College will be sharing several ready-to-use cases that introduce data analytics concepts in the introductory accounting courses, including financial accounting and managerial accounting. The cases use Excel, Power BI, and/or Tableau. Wendy and Tracie have created brand-new cases for 2020. These new cases include micro learning videos for Excel, Power BI, Tableau, and basic accounting skills. The cases included are completely free for both instructors and students.

Learning Outcome: Participants will be able to integrate basic data analytics teaching materials into their introductory accounting courses regardless of their current skill level with data analytics.

Presenters: Wendy Tietz (CPA, CMA, PhD) teaches at Kent State University. Tracie Miller-Knobles (CPA) teaches at Austin Community College. Both are textbook authors and involved in a variety of accounting professional organizations, where they present regularly.

 Webinar Speakers: Barbara Trenholm, FCPA, FCA, ICD.D, is a professor emerita at the University of New Brunswick, for which she continues to teach on a part-time basis. Her teaching and educational leadership has been widely recognized with numerous local, national, and international teaching awards. She also served a three-year term as a Teaching Scholar at the University of New Brunswick.

Scott MacEachern is a Lecturer in Accounting at Simon Fraser University. He currently works in course development and student project review for the KPMG Master of Accounting with Data and Analytics and teaches introductory and intermediate financial and managerial accounting, as well as audit. Previously, Scott has been the CFO of a public multinational fibre optic deployment company, auditor for a Big 4 accounting firm, and partner of his own firm. Scott's goal is to incorporate his wide-ranging career experiences into his lectures and materials development to enhance student interest and engagement.

Cloud accounting has truly revolutionised the accounting profession. Products like Xero and QBO are taking millions of small and medium sized businesses and their accounting needs to the cloud. In addition to these core cloud accounting platforms, there are hundreds of cloud-based ecosystem add-on products that plug into them to service particular sectors. We are also seeing the trend of some larger businesses using a combination of new cloud tools to replace their traditional ERP systems.
