CAAA Education Committee Report

August 2012

The Education Committee had a busy year. I took over as Chair of the committee from Sandy Hilton. The majority of the Education Committee carried over from the past few years, which has helped tremendously. We continued to gain a few additional members at last year’s conference and throughout the year. My philosophy is to accept all volunteers and then encourage them to be as involved as possible.

The current members include:

  • Jamie Aldcorn, Seneca College
  • Mark Binder, Red River College
  • Angela Davis, Booth University College
  • Susan Graydon Kelsall, Humber College
  • Beth Honeychurch, CASB
  • David Inhaber, CGA
  • Joanne Jones, York University
  • Carmen Kuczewski, Concordia University
  • Camillo Lento, Lakehead University
  • Kathy Letourneau, CICA
  • Michelle Loveland, University of Western Ontario
  • Brandy Mackintosh, University of Saskatchewan
  • Christopher Martinez, Centennial College
  • Penny Parker, Fanshawe College
  • Linda Robinson, University of Waterloo
  • Rand Rowlands, George Brown College
  • Eckhart Schumann, University of Toronto
  • Bob Sproule, University of Waterloo
  • Dragan Stojanovic, University of Toronto
  • Susan Wolcott, CASB

With the help of the many dedicated volunteers on the education committee, we spent most of the year planning the 2012 PEI CAAA conference.  In connection with this year’s conference theme of “Troubled Waters,” we organized many new and innovative sessions focused on teaching and learning and on connecting academics with industry, public accounting firms and the professional bodies.  This year’s conference included a full day professional development day prior to the conference on “Successfully” teaching today’s students, a plenary session which provided insight into the challenges a local PEI business owner faced in managed his business and 14 sessions during the regular conference.  We also organized the French and English case competitions and the Howard Teall Innovation Award.

Building on the committee`s focus on Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, this year we awarded two research grants totalling approximately $10,000 for the CAAA/CMA Canada  Scholarship of Teaching and Learning  program. The two projects will focus on the use of management accounting systems in small and medium-sized enterprises and teaching professionalism in post-secondary accounting programs. There were also two sessions planned during the conference with the objective of promoting action research in the area of teaching and learning.

Thank you to all of the committee members who worked with me on making the conference a success this year!
