Professor Karim Jamal is the 2010 Haim Falk Award Winner

The CAAA is pleased to announce that this year’s winner of the Haim Falk Award for Distinguished Contribution to Accounting Thought is Professor Karim Jamal, the Chartered Accountants’ Distinguished Chair in Accounting in the School of Business at the University of Alberta.

The award is given by the CAAA in recognition of a significant contribution to scholarly thinking and research in Canada through a body of work that clearly has contributed to the advancement of accounting thought. Professor Jamal has contributed to advancement of accounting thought not only through his formal research activities but also through his engagement with the public accounting profession.

Professor Jamal’s research record is impressive.  He has published more than fifty refereed research articles including twelve in pinnacle accounting journals.  These publications have advanced our understanding of the technical and professional practices of accounting and auditing.  Research in the areas of fraud detection, the social expertise of auditors and judgment processes are but some of the areas in which Professor Jamal has contributed.  Of equal importance is his participation in discussions about public practice and accounting regulation.  As the nomination letter for the award noted, Professor Jamal has written more than a dozen comment letters to accounting regulators about issues involving the public accounting profession.  In these comment letters, Professor Jamal highlights the linkages between academic research activities and the domain of public practice as well as the importance of using academic expertise to contribute to regulatory discussion.  For these reasons,  we are pleased to award the Haim Falk Award to Professor Karim Jamal.
