CAAA Education Committee
We need Volunteers!
Today’s educators are faced with demands from students, administrators and the general public for a different type of education, one that develops critical thinking and delivers work relevant competencies. In response the Education Committee has increased its role within the CAAA, particularly at the Annual Conference.
We are asking for volunteers to help us achieve our mission and our objectives, as stated below. The various duties that are part of what we do are also described below.
If you are interested in helping us in any way, please contact the Committee Chair, Sandy Hilton, at sandy.hilton@ubc.ca

Objectives
1. To assess the learning environment in Canadian post-secondary institutions
2. To assist Canadian Accounting instructors
3. To raise the profile of quality instructors in Canadian accounting
4. To provide new and creative teaching resources in accounting
5. To promote and communicate the scholarship of Teaching and Learning Activities
6. To build bridges to the Teaching and Learning Support Centers of the various institutions
Conference Education Sessions
One of the primary functions of the education committee is organizing the education sessions at the CAAA’s annual conference.
We hold from 5 to 7 sessions, and our goal is to present information that will be useful and interesting to conference attendees (members and others).
Individuals who have ideas as to what could be presented would be an asset to this function. As well, we need people who are willing to take ideas from the committee and organize the session. This involves:
· Contacting and arranging presenters
· Discussing, advising and assisting with respect to the content of the session
· Arranging with the CAAA office to make sure AV, travel and other needs of the presenters are met
· Introducing the presenters and managing the session
· Reporting progress regularly to the committee via conference calls (monthly)
The committee is looking for 5 to 7 people who would be willing to champion one or more conference education sessions.
PD Day Before Conference
The education committee is also responsible for organizing a day of educational professional development before the conference that would be of interest to members and other conference attendees. People interested in this area would be responsible for:
· Brainstorming topic areas
· Contacting and arranging presenters
· Discussing, advising and assisting with the content of the presentation
· Arranging with the CAAA office to make sure AV, travel and other needs are met
· Introducing the presenters and managing the session
· Reporting progress regularly to the committee via conference calls (monthly)
The committee is looking for two or three people who would be willing to champion the PD day before the conference.
Howard Teall Innovation in Accounting Education Award and Annual Conference Education Poster Session
It is the responsibility of the education committee to solicit submissions for the Howard Teall Innovation in Accounting Education Award. This responsibility also includes arranging for individuals to review the submissions and selecting a winner.
The Education Poster Session is an initiative that has not been overly successful in the past, but there is a desire to have this event at the annual conference. There is a link between the Howard Teall Innovation award and the poster session in that both seek submissions in innovative accounting techniques.
The committee is looking for two or three people who would be willing to help with the Howard Teall award selection process, and the annual conference education poster session.
Case Competition, English and French
The education committee is responsible to solicit submissions for the Case Competition Awards, in both English and French. This responsibility also includes arranging for individuals to review the submissions and selecting a winner.
The committee is looking for two people (one English and one French or bilingual) who would be willing to help with the Case Competition process.
Educators’ Forum
The education committee is responsible to seek out submissions to be included in the Educators’ Forum of the newsletter.
The committee is looking for one or two people who would be willing to help with this duty.
The “Beechy Project”
The Beechy report is a research report published in the early 1980s which provided a wealth of information about the state of accounting education in Canada: things such as courses offered, course content and pedagogy, number and qualifications of faculty members, degree options, etc. There has been interest expressed in conducting a study that would update and extend this type of information.
CAAA is eager to see this project move forward and there has been expression of interest by publishing companies, who are willing to provide some funding. To get this project going, the education committee needs a group of people who are willing to:
· examine the original research report written by Thomas Beechy
· query funding agencies to determine what information they would like gathered
· draft up a survey instrument
· conduct the research and summarize the results
· publish the findings
The committee is looking for one person who is willing to champion this project, and others who are interested in working on it.
