Professor Howard D. Teall Wins 2002
L.S. Rosen Outstanding Educator Award

2002 L.S. Rosen Award Winner
Professor Howard D. Teall
Wilfrid Laurier University

The L.S. Rosen Award Committee is pleased to announce that this year’s recipient is Professor Howard D. Teall of Wilfrid Laurier University. The Committee chose Professor Teall as this year’s award recipient because of a continuous and impressive record of teaching excellence, innovative educational practices, and his contribution to research and publication.

Professor Teall joined the School of Business and Economics of Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU) after completing doctoral studies at the University of Western Ontario in 1987. Since that time, he has been heavily involved in shaping programs and curricula at WLU. Examples of his innovative efforts include Laurier’s integrated MBA program, in which students effectively enroll in a single integrated course; the community-based MBA program that has provided a fit for experienced managers who required a flexible graduate program; and Adopt-a-Company, an innovation that has become a major learning vehicle for MBA students.

In addition to his innovative activities, Professor Teall has also distinguished himself as an educator whose skills are recognized at Laurier and beyond. He is in demand across Canada as a management educator, developing and teaching courses for the Banff School of Management, the Ivey School of Business, major Canadian companies, and accounting professions. As one of his referees points out, “[N]ot only is he instrumental in designing effective curricula, he is one of our most effective teachers in the accounting area. Reflective of this teaching excellence is Howard’s ability to instill an understanding and appreciation for accounting in very diverse audiences—professional accounting students, business students, and practising managers. He has also taught students in Japan, Finland, and France. He clearly is gifted in making this challenging material interesting and valuable for a wide variety of students.”

Howard Teall has been active in both the financial and management accounting professions and, as CAAA President in 1997, he played a key role in establishing new directions for the association. His research and publication record includes articles in academic and professional journals as well as three leading textbooks tailored for the Canadian environment.

As Chair of the L.S. Rosen Committee, I would like to express my appreciation for the work of my committee members, Irene M. Gordon of Simon Fraser University and Leo Gallant of St. Francis Xavier University. Additionally, the Committee would like to thank the nominators who, owing to the excellent slate of nominees, challenged us with a tough decision.
