Howard Teall Innovation in Accounting Education Award Competition
Do you motivate your students with original learning activities? Have you found a new way to encourage them to pursue future learning opportunities? Do you have a unique approach to accounting education? Share the details of your initiative and you could win the eighth Howard Teall Innovation in Accounting Education Award! A first prize of $500 and a second prize of $250 will be awarded at the CAAA Conference (May 31-June 3, 2012) in Charlottetown, PEI. Winners will also present their innovations at a session following that luncheon. (Winners are expected to attend for both purposes.)**
The deadline for submissions is February 9th, 2012. All you have to do is submit a description of your activity to Penny Parker (PParker@fanshawec.ca), a Microsoft Word attachment, maximum 4 pages. Your description should:
- identify the course in which the activity was experienced
- explain why you developed this learning activity
- state the learning outcomes pursued
- describe the instructional strategies used
- expose the evaluation criteria and grading methods applied (if any)
- briefly discuss the results achieved.
To preserve anonymity, email the cover page (with name and contact information) and the remainder of the proposal in separate messages. Please indicate also whether you would like your innovation to be considered for the Learning Strategies Exchange Poster Session at the CAAA conference. ***
Submitters (or at least one member in a group submission) must be CAAA members. Prizes will be awarded only if submissions of deserving quality (in either French or English) are received. The CAAA Education Committee will select winners in a blind review process. The peer review of submissions will be completed, and notifications sent by March 16, 2012.
* Professor Teall won the CAAA’s L. S. Rosen Outstanding Educator Award in 2002 because of a continuous and impressive record of teaching excellence, innovative educational practices, and contributions to research and publication. He was in demand across Canada as a management educator, developing and teaching courses for the Banff School of Management, the Ivy School of Business, major Canadian companies, and accounting professions. Howard was active in both the financial and management accounting professions. His publication record included three leading textbooks tailored for the Canadian environment. Not only was he instrumental in designing effective curricula, he was one of the most effective teachers in the accounting area. Reflective of this teaching excellence was Howard’s ability to instill an understanding and appreciation for accounting in very diverse audiences – professional accounting students, business students, and practicing managers. He also taught students in Japan, Finland, and France.
** Prize winners of the Howard Teall Innovation in Accounting Education Award Competition will be eligible to apply (to the CAAA office) for a travel subsidy # (funds provided by CGA-Canada) to attend the CAAA Annual Conference.
*** All participants (one per entry) in the Learning Strategies Exchange Poster Session are also eligible to apply for the travel subsidy.
# The CAAA/CGA-Canada travel subsidy is awarded by the Executive Director in consultation with the Chair of the Education Committee to worthy applicants participating in education-related activities at the CAAA Annual Conference. The subsidies are aimed at making participation in these activities possible for post-secondary educators who would otherwise be unable to attend. There is a maximum of $1,000 for any single award. The primary criterion is need. As funds are limited, there is an element of first-come, first-served as well. The winning applicants will be chosen between mid- and end-April, to allow them to make economical travel plans.
