CAAA Case Competition 2011

CAAA Annual Conference in Toronto

The CAAA Education Committee wants your entries for the CAAA Case Competition. It’s a great opportunity for you to share your expertise and win! There is a $500 prize and a certificate of achievement for each of the two categories — English and French. You can submit cases covering any accounting area (financial, managerial, audit, tax, international, control, ethics, other). At least one author must be a CAAA member.

This year we are asking for submissions in both a "brief case" category and a "comprehensive case" category.  Depending on the number of submissions in each category and language, the Education Committee may combine categories.  Case submissions should be accompanied by a comprehensive teaching note that describes the objectives of the case, possible facilitation advice for instructors adopting the case, and feedback from students that have used the case.  Authors should identify the category they are submitting to.

Brief cases: are generally 3-4 pages of narrative and may have 2-3 exhibits.  While they are as rigorous as comprehensive cases, they are usually more focused on particular topics or content and may not be as open-ended as comprehensive cases.

Comprehensive cases: are generally 5-9 pages of narrative and may have 4-6 exhibits.  They tend to be very rigorous and usually require some quantitative and qualitative analysis of broad business problems.  Most comprehensive cases will integrate more than one content area.

The Education Committee will select the winners following a blind review process. Winners will be notified by the end of March. Prizes will be awarded at the Conference. Winning cases will be posted on the CAAA website for 60 days. The authors of the winning cases will be invited to submit their cases to Accounting Perspectives (AP) (submission fees will be paid by the CAAA).

Submit English and French cases (including teaching notes and/or instructions) electronically to Sandy Hilton (sandy.hilton@ubc.ca) as a Word or PDF attachment before February 9, 2011. To preserve anonymity, please email the cover page (with name and contact information) in a separate file.

At least three submissions of deserving quality must be received for prizes to be awarded in each category.

Winners of the case competition will be eligible to apply (to the CAAA office) for a travel subsidy* (funds provided by CGA-Canada) to attend the CAAA Annual Conference.

* The CAAA/CGA-Canada travel subsidy is awarded by the Executive Director to worthy applicants participating in education-related activities at the CAAA Annual Conference. The subsidies are aimed at making participation in these activities possible for post-secondary educators who would otherwise be unable to attend. There is a maximum of $1,000 for any single award. The primary criterion is need. As funds are limited, there is an element of first-come, first-served as well. The winning applicants will be chosen between mid- and end-April, to allow them to make economical travel plans.
